Social Justice

The Lindfield Public School Social Justice Program works to encourage Lindfield Public School students to grow into good global citizens by empowering them to help children suffering beyond our school. We hope our work will help our children to realise that while no one can do everything, we can all do something to make the world a better place.

Established after a school-wide survey in 2010, this Sub-Committee coordinates projects that help children who are suffering through chronic poverty or crisis locally, nationally or globally. We also support activities that encourage cross-cultural understanding such as Harmony Day. We try to runone project per term as well as supportingsocial justice-related initiatives ofLindfield Public School community members such as the SRC, teachers or individual parents.

A major activity has beenestablishing a ‘friend-school’ relationship with Yegeli Community School in Pori, in the remote PNG Southern Highlands. See our YouTube video Pori Kids at Yegeli School PNG 2012 to see how much they have appreciated our gifts of school supplies, black boards, desks and chairs, funding for a teacher, Lindfield Public School uniforms and teddy bears.

We have also collected second-hand shoes and sent them to Haiti, catered for the first Lindfield Public School Inter-Faith Information Forum, sent almost 100 Operation Christmas Child gift boxes to chronically poor children and organised cupcake days for the Queensland Flood and East Africa Famine Appeals. The Social Justice Committee also coordinates the school’s Social Justice Award, an annual trophy for a student who has helped someone in need beyond the school gates.

If you would like to encourage our school community to help children in need, please consider joining the Social Justice Committee. Please check this web page for advance notice of opportunities to help when you can, occasional events to meet other parents interested in social justice and for insights on our work.

We are also keen to hear about any projects you are involved in or would like to run so we can see if the school community can help. Preferred projects are those that help involve and educate the children building their self-esteem and helping them to appreciate what they have – as well as having a positive impact on someone’s life.
